In Scotland, New Year's Eve is called Hogmanay and 'first footing' remains a popular custom with people visiting friends' and neighbours' houses just after midnight. There are a number of strange and interesting New Year's traditions around the world. Fireworks light up the skies in hundreds of cities as 12 midnight strikes around the globe. The display takes place in Sydney Harbour, with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge making it a stunning setting. In recent years, Sydney in Australia has been the host to one of the first of these celebrations as New Year arrives there before most other major international cities. In many cities all over the world, spectacular fireworks displays take place as soon as the clock passes midnight on 31 December. Statues of the gods were carried through the streets of the city, and in this way the Babylonians believed that their world had been cleaned to prepare for the new year and a new spring. Barley was cut in Mesopotamia in the spring, and during Akitu there was a different ritual on each of the 11 days that the celebration lasted. The Babylonians held their celebrations on the first new moon after the spring equinox and called this festival Akitu (which comes from the word the Sumerians used for barley). The city of Babylon in ancient Mesopotamia was where the first New Year's celebrations were recorded about 4,000 years ago. ![]() The Persians and Phoenicians started their new year at the spring equinox (this is around 20 March when the Sun shines more or less directly on the equator and the length of the night and the day are almost the same). For example, in Egypt the beginning of the year coincided with when the River Nile flooded, and this normally happened when the star Sirius rose. Sometimes these were simply an opportunity for people to eat, drink and have fun, but in some places the festivities were connected to the land or astronomical events. There have been celebrations to mark the beginning of a new year for thousands of years. ![]() I used a plain white board I bought at Staples, you could also use a chalkboard.'For last year's words belong to last year's languageĪnd next year's words await another voice.Īnd to make an end is to make a beginning.' – TS Eliot New year, old celebrations It keeps me motivated and inspires me to do better each week. To read the time in another time zone, you simply look at the disc numeral that aligns with the desired location (i.e in the picture above it is 12:00am in Moscow). As you adjust both hands in this setting, the 24 hour ring will rotate in synchronization. In the preceding crown position, you hack the seconds and are able to set both the hours and minutes. It is very simple and easy to use, in one setting position of the crown you are able to advance the hour hand in either direction without interrupting the timekeeping and the date will self-correct as you pass between hours. Moving out past the sun-brushed blue and vertically teak-striped portion of the dial, you will find a circle of global destinations printed in red (GMT), silvery (+1h in summer) and blue (places without daylight savings) for added aid in usage of the complication. The gorgeous blue dial features a 24-hour scale in its centre, framing a laser-ablated ocean and surrounding continents on a grade 5 titanium plate. Another point of added value is its GMT Worldtimer complication. ![]() Movement to movement, the in-house Omega 8938 movement may have 10 hours less power reserve (60 hours) than the Rolex 3285, but it does boast an anti-magnetic Co-Axial escapement with a free sprung balance and silicon hairspring, Master Chronometer certification, and a greater degree of movement decoration that is actually visible via its exhibition caseback. As an example, the Omega Aqua Terra 150M Co‑Axial Master Chronometer GMT Worldtimer 43mm is 50 metres more water-resistant with a depth rating of 150m secured by a screw-down crown. It is actually just as robust, if not more robust, then the Explorer II ref. ![]() The watch may have a more elegant look to its design in comparison to the Rolex Explorer II, but don’t get it twisted. If a switch-up in aesthetic, and extra millimetre in diameter doesn’t bother you, you actually stand to get more value from the Omega Aqua Terra 150M Co‑Axial Master Chronometer GMT Worldtimer 43mm. Omega Aqua Terra 150M Co‑Axial Master Chronometer GMT Worldtimer 43mm For the sixth entry into the series, I am going to tackle 3 Rolex Explorer II alternatives you may want to look into if you think the call from your AD is never going to come. It is my hope that these lesser discussed pieces can, in many respects, offer the same level of satisfaction as the actual watch in question. As a refresher for those who may not have seen previous entries in the series, my goal is to showcase readily available alternatives that provide a similar essence or merit to watches that have become increasingly unobtainable. It is time for another round of “ Don’t Feed the Hype“. Head on over to the Shop to discover the whole set-up.I/trending 30508 DON’T FEED THE HYPE: 3 alternatives to the Rolex Explorer II ref. The watch was originally born with a dark grey metallic dial and has developed an almost sandy-colored patina throughout that matches the lume very nicely. Overall, it looks like this watch was well taken care of and has taken on a unique and beautiful patina on the dial. ![]() Lorenz is an Italian company, and in the 1960s, the brand partnered with Aquastar to sell professional-grade dive watches with its moniker. It's also interesting to note that this watch was originally sold through Lorenz in Italy and is dual-branded with the retailer signature on the dial. As many of my colleagues and friends in the watch world know, I always prefer to have a matching brand buckle when possible, so this "starfish" example is like the cherry on top. I would throw this '60s watch on with a vintage jungle shirt from a similar era to really tap into the vibe and feel myself. This is the exact set-up someone would have used back in the '60s, and that gets me going. Additionally, the slicer can be used for slicing or dicing celery or carrots, or for cutting up onions, peppers, potatoes, apples, and other food products that have been cut into small enough pieces to fit into one of the chambers. ![]() Alternatively, the tubular chambers can be provided with other lengths and diameters selected for use with other generally tubular food products such as sausages, pickles, cucumbers, zucchini, and so forth. Furthermore, because the longitudinal blades 26 and the transverse blades 30 are recessed within the housing 12, they do not a present safety hazard when putting hot dogs into the chambers or taking the sliced hot dogs out, so the slicer 10 is safe to use.Īlso, the slicer 10 is shown with curved chamber walls that form tubular chambers with a length and diameter selected for receiving the hot dogs to be sliced. Additionally, because the housing 12 has multiple chambers 18 and the longitudinal handle 28 is provided for operating the longitudinal blade sets 24 of each chamber, multiple hot dogs 20 can be quickly and easily sliced at the same time in one operation, so that large numbers of hot dogs can be prepared for serving large numbers of kids in schools, camps, day care, etc. The longitudinal blade assembly 14 can be operated before the transverse blade assembly 16 or vice versa, or only one of the blade assemblies can be operated if that is all that is desired. In this way, the longitudinal blade assembly 14 and the transverse blade assembly 16 permit a user to slice hot dogs 20 both lengthwise into quarters (longitudinally) and sideways through their width (transversely) to end up with small pieces of hot dog that can be safely eaten by children without choking.

This allows me to easily visualize where the zoom will occur when applying the effect. I mapped each section to a number 1-9, with 1 being the upper-left frame, and 9 being the lower right frame. I divided the 4K frame into nine different sections: upper-left, upper-mid, upper right, middle-left, etc. With this in mind, 200% is the base zoom level that I used for all zooms in this tutorial. If you import 4K footage inside a 1080p project, you can zoom in 200% while still maintaining 1080p quality. ![]() Watch our hands-on tutorial inside for the details. If you’re someone who shoots video in 4K, but delivers in a lesser resolution, then you might considering creating your own custom set of areas as well. I recently created a custom set of areas to make it quicker to zoom with greater consistency throughout a project. It’s great for doing faux-panning, or zooming in Final Cut Pro X to highlight specific parts of the frame without reducing video quality. As you might imagine, using such a technique is particularly beneficial for hands-on video tutorials when referencing specific items in frame. One of the advantages of shooting video in 4K is that it allows you to zoom and pan within a 1080p project frame while still maintaining 1080p video quality. All in all, the media surface description terms hold up reasonably well for RC paper, much less so for fine art papers. When mechanical calendaring is applied with less vigor during the paper making process, then the ink jet coatings on a fine art paper core often still carry evidence of the paper structure itself. Calendaring is very common with the 'fine art" papers, but the effect is more wide ranging, giving rise to "ultrasmooth" matt fine art papers as well as more toothy surfaces like Hahnemuhle's William Turner. Some RC papers are mechanically "calendared", again giving rise to a very uniform texture. The final surface result is typically thus a very homogeneous, non-oriented surface texture. This is because the top coating imparts most of the surface effect and typically without any bi-directional differences since it is being coated over a very smooth, non conformal, paper-concealing polyethylene layer. RC papers are far more consistent than "fine art" inkjet media in classification as "luster", "Pearl", "Satin", "Semi-gloss", Glossy", etc. Just couple of points.2 maybe 3 cents worth. Glossy RC papers, Fibre-Baryta and other media.ĭecember 2012, 500+ inkjet media white spectral plots. Maybe a manufacturer could learn something from a "poll" like that and give us the right textures and the right descriptions in the coming years. Also mention whether you like that texture and gloss quality including its change when printed with the inks you use. Not a traditional polling request here but something else describe the surface of the glossy papers you use or at least have a sample off and tell us the manufacturer had it right or wrong. There is that other confusion where Pearl either means a Pearly texture or a Pearlescent (Opale) effect in the coating And I am not sure myself what Luster is compared to Pearl or Satin to Semi-Matte, etc. It surprises me again and again that the "manufacturer's" description of the texture and the gloss is so often off the mark. ![]() I have a collection of about 500 inkjet papers, say half of them glossy. I thought about hijacking that thread as it is already wandering off to unknown territory and starts with an odd list for the poll. There is a new thread and poll in this forum about RC Lustre papers. ![]() ![]() Secure Trading Financial Services is an active member of the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) that defines card industry global regulation.
